How to Perfect the Basic Badminton Swing

Mastering the perfect swing can allow you greater control and power while playing badminton. The ideal badminton swing requires proper body position, correct racket grip and movement, and full swing follow-through. Learning these techniques will give you the tools to perfect your badminton swing.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand in the correct base position. Place your feet apart evenly, bend the knees slightly and keep your shoulders level.

    • 2

Grip the badminton racket with your right hand in the forehand position.

    • 3

Turn your body to the side by bringing your right foot back and making it even with the left foot. Your left foot should be in front.

    • 4

Raise your racket and bend your right elbow, holding the racket firmly. Raise your left arm slightly higher than your right, slightly bending your elbow. Your left arm will act as a guide as you are hitting the shuttlecock and help keep your body balanced. Make sure your shoulders are even.

    • 5

Swing your racket so that the point of contact is slightly in front of your body. Imagine contact at the one o'clock position, where 12 o'clock is directly above your head. As you swing, step slightly forward with your right foot for balance.

    • 6

Follow the swing completely through, moving the racket across your body and down to your left side.

    • 7

Move your right foot back and even with your left foot into correct base position to complete the swing.
