How to Hit a Drop Shot in Badminton

Drop shots in badminton are very delicate and can help you earn points to win the game. If you execute them well and at the right moment your opponent will never see them coming and will be completely thrown off balance. You can make these shots by using several different techniques.

  1. Make a Backhand Drop Shot

      Develop your backhand grip.

      Position your body so that your back is facing the net.

      Put your weight on your racket foot.

      Pull your arm up from the shoulder so that your forearm is parallel to the floor.

      Position your racket so that it is across your body and the head of the racket is pointing downward.

      Put your arm and elbow close to your body.

      Make contact with the shuttle in front of your body and as high up as you can reach.

      Hit the shuttle, reducing the speed of the racket as you touch it.

      Direct your shot by angling your racket face in the direction that you want the shot to go.

      Get your body back to the base position of badminton.

    Make an Around the Head Drop Shot

      Position your body so that it is square to the net.

      Bend your upper body sideways to your non racket side as your arms come through.

      Put your weight on your non racket leg.

      Bring the racket behind your head, bending your elbow as you do this.

      Swing the racket forward, brushing your forearm to the top of your head before it becomes straight.

      Rapidly transfer your body weight to your non racket leg so that it gets you back to your base position.

    Make a Forehand Drop Shot

      Get familiar with the forehand grip and use it.

      Position your body so that you are standing sideways to the net with your non racket shoulder facing the net.

      Put your weight on your rear foot.

      Lock your wrist and bend your elbow as you prepare to swing forward.

      Elevate your non racket hand and point it at the shuttle. This will improve your chances of hitting it, it will also improve your balance.

      Make contact with the shuttle as high up as possible and in front of your body.

      Reduce the speed of your racket as you hit or make contact with the shuttle.
