Badminton Backhand technique

In the above video,  player in Blue jersey is making a backhand from rear court , now the reason why i showed you this video is because most player always overdo , in following professional player.

It can be very dangerous for you techniques.

You will understand this in the end of article.

Badminton backhand Clear

Step 1 :- How to hold racket for backhand clear

The First step for executing a backhand clear is to know how to hold badminton racket for backhand

You wanna turn away from the V grip and a little bit move towards a pan handle grip now this is for the backhand from the back of the court. Now the script going to help you to stabilize the grip as you come through the shot.

Below is the picture of badminton backhand grip

Here you can see in the picture of backhand grip it is shown to put your thumb on the space given between the horizontal and vertical plane on the wooden handle as you can see in this picture. Some players or people might tell you to place whole thumb on flat surface as shown in picture below

‘But use of this grip is not effective and it limits the range of motion of your wrist and power generated from is is much low.

Step 2 :- Starting of swing

backhand

After holding the racket with the backhand grip now drop the racket to you back side so that there is gap between your palm and racket, the motive of this is to hold the racket with the fingers and not with your fist. This will help in generating an explosive snap of racket which is important in backhand stroke.

Step 3 :- Collecting power for the clear

The next step is to keep your arm very loose if you are tensing your arm you are not going to be able to hit the backhand shot

Approach Shuttle with dominant leg with your elbow Pointing at birdie and make sure your head of the racket is on your non racket shoulder , as shown in the picture above.

Step 4 :- Contact with the shuttle

The last step in the backhand clear is to hit the shuttle

From here you will extend your arm as your pivot your body forward and snap your wrist at highest point of contact with shuttle and follow through appropriately.

Follow through the arm from position in Step 3 to Position of Step 4, While make the lunge with you racket leg.

Some key points

  • Take the shuttle as much high as possible(contact point)
  • It include the power of both wrist and arm movement
  • Always keep your knees little bit bend while playing the shot

Summary

So the first step is to keep your arm tucked in, Second step is to lead with your elbow third is to extend your arm and the fourth is to whip the racket but remember do not follow through the motion , you racket movement should not go beyond the contact point of shuttle.

Some Drills for making your backhand stronger

When you are at home, there are two method which you can use to make your backhand stronger.

One is by wall practice it means that you are continuously hitting shuttle against the wall at a height of backhand clear but what if you don’t have a wall whose surface is plane or not too much space available then what you can do is tie a shuttle with stand or roof at a height so that you can perform a backhand clear as I told you earlier.

When you are in court, ask your Partner to feed shuttle to your backhand side it depends on you how much you want to practice but a normal drills will look like ,30 shuttle with 3 sets.

When to use a Backhand Clear?

Mainly backhand clears are played by a player when he feels bad it would be difficult to reach shuttle with overhead position, now for a beginner I would advise do not use back hand much in Matches and try to take as running overhead short as possible but if you are feeling tired then going for a back hand can be a good option to save energy as it is easier and require less speed than a overhead shot.

During a long match it is a good option to use back hand once in a while for saving energy,But make sure that you are playing a good quality shot because if your clears are not much powerful than you will end up giving away opportunity to your opponent for making a winning shot.

It actually depends on what exactly you want. I personally love using the backhand strokes because of the level of deception and the choice of strokes will definitely keep your opponent guessing. You save a lot of energy too.

What is your mistake in following professional players?

The video you seen above their the player the blue jersey is making a backhand, now most of beginner will see that in this way

Hey that player is executing the backhand(contact point) while the shuttle is parallel to his chest so why i need to make the highest contact point to do a backhand clear? if he can do it  i must start doing the backhand in this way.

The best advice i can give you as been a player who has experience of 5-6 years of professional play that never ever follow techniques of professional if you are just a beginner it will only create confusion in your mind.

First learn the fundamentals of badminton and apply these in your game after that you can think about the technique with the professional are using.

Some reasons why you are not able to learn backhand

Always trust your coach

Nowadays we have access to unlimited information and we can improve our game by consuming these knowledge ,

but the wrong thing to do is learn a technique from your coach and than verifying it on YouTube by watch a video to ensure that where your coach is right or wrong .

Doing these thing can make your progress more delayed,

It is OK if your coach is not a good player or you don’t have one but if he has the skills to beat you than it is foolish to wander here and there in search of information.

Using more power

At first instance you might think it requires a lot of power to hit a clear from backhand but as you gain experience you will realize that almost every shot in badminton is a about technique and timing, same thing is with backhand clears don’t try to add extra power in your swing just for the technique which I told you earlier and keep your bracket are loose focus on timing and you will get hang of it

Contact point shuttle

You probably not know this but but whenever you are hitting a shot from height best angle to make contact with shuttle is is not with the base but with feathers and base both together , this picture below might help you understand this.

Badminton backhand – Full guide step by step

Here you can see that shuttle contact point with racket is at an angle and not with base of shuttlecock, now you might be thinking why this is because that when you hit weather and base at the same time it will generate maximum velocity but if you hit a shuttle with base first then the opposite side of shuttlecock will slow down the initial flight of birdie,

So next time try to wait for the right moment to create angle with shuttle while making shot from back court.

Poor Body position

It is easier to play shots when you are behind shuttle and what i see most beginner doing even though there footwork is not proper they still try to play backhand shot during matches, not having a good footwork will only delay you in reaching shuttle in proper time so my advice would be first learn backhand clear while standing and then integrate it with backhand footwork, because otherwise you will end up reaching shuttle too late and playing backhand while the shuttle is behind you will be very difficult for you.

Wrong Grip

If you have completed this article then you then you would have known by now what is a correct way to play backhand clear but if not then I will tell you again, using and normal back hand grip which means place in your whole thumb on racket handle flat surface is not the right way to go what it will do it is reduce ability of your wrist to generate power with snap .

Instead your thumb should be on edge of your racket handle there should be grow between the two flat ends this allow yours wrist to snap without any restriction. You can see the picture of grip in the first step which I mentioned while playing backhand.
