How to Line Up Knuckles for Baseball

Fundamentals provide a foundation upon which more advanced skills are built. Baseball is no different. Excellence in hitting requires practice, but effective practice entails proper technique. Gripping the bat incorrectly restricts wrist movement and bat speed. Lining up the knuckles properly on the bat gives the wrists more freedom, allowing them to generate greater bat speed.

      Hold the bat handle in either hand with the barrel of the the bat resting on the ground.

      Place the proper hand around bottom of the bat handle. If batting left-handed, place the right hand. If batting right-handed, place the left hand. Arrange this hand so that the bat bisects the bottoms of the fingers diagonally.

      Enclose your hand around the bat handle.

      Place your other hand over the bat directly above the first hand.

      Hold the bat out in front of you. Turn the upper hand so that the middle pair of knuckles rests between the middle and back knuckles of the bottom hand.
