How to Choose a Baseball Bat for Little League

Millions of kids grow up playing Little League baseball. Part of hitting well is swinging the right bat. The player needs a bat she will feel comfortable with -- one that is not too heavy to manage. Determining the player's height and weight will help you find the right bat for optimum play.

Instructions

Consider the material the bat is made of. Although the pros use wood bats, others from Little League to the collegiate level prefer composite metal or aluminum baseball bats. Bats made from these materials are much lighter and easier to swing. A lighter weight allows for a faster swing and allows the player to easily make adjustments while swinging the bat.

Consider the size of the baseball bat. For larger players, a longer bat is likely the best choice. Smaller players will usually do well swinging a shorter bat. The important thing is that you feel comfortable with the length of your bat.

    • 3

Consider the weight of the baseball bat. Older, stronger players will want to use a heavier bat, which can produce a more powerful swing and carry the ball farther. Smaller, younger players should swing a lighter bat. Aluminum bats do have weight restrictions in some Little Leagues, so check the rules where you play.

One way to test the weight is to have the player grab the bat by the handle with one hand and then stretch out his arms to his sides. If he can't keep the bat at shoulder level for 10 seconds, it weighs too much.

    • 4

Consider the thickness of the handle. A larger or older player may want to try using a bat with a thicker handle.

    • 5

Consider the cost. The more expensive baseball bats made of composite materials are not necessarily the best. A higher price tag does not guarantee a higher performing bat.

Use a sizing chart to choose the bat (see Resources). These charts will allow you to match the child's weight and size to figure out the right length of bat.
