Check the bat rules of the league. Some leagues limit players to one kind of bat. Most of them will use aluminium and composite bats that give the ball an extra pop and will last longer than wood bats. Once you know what kind of bat the league uses, check the Little League website for a list of eligible bats in that category.

Have the child swing light and heavy bats to determine an ideal bat weight. He must be able to swing without any physical struggle. A light bat is better for a fast swing, but check with league rules about minimum weight requirements.

Pick a bat length that gives the batter complete plate coverage. In general, a player age 5 to 7 should have a bat 24 to 26 inches long, while a 12-year-old should have a bat 30 to 32 inches long. The proper bat length will always depend on the weight and strength of the child.
