Steps for Throwing a Ball

Throwing a baseball is one of the most rudimentary things to learn in sports, but it does take a little bit of practice to learn how to execute. From the grip to the follow-through, you must take a methodical approach to throwing the ball to get velocity and accuracy. Once you try it a few times and work out the kinks, it is easy and fun, but it requires a certain amount of coordination in order to get it right. Don't be discouraged if your first few pitches go wide.

Instructions

Grip the ball across the four seams that form the horseshoe. The thumb should be below the ball. You should grip it with the fingertips, not back in the palm.

    • 2

Find the target and turn your body sideways so that the hand without the ball is pointing towards it. Start with your hands together in front of your chest holding the ball and your feet shoulder width apart. Let your hand with the ball fall down towards your hip and back.

    • 3

Simultaneously extend the hand not holding the ball towards the target while stretching the hand holding the ball back until your body looks like the letter "T." As this happens, take a step towards your target with your front foot.

    • 4

Bring your ball hand up to form a 90 degree angle so that the ball is close to your ear. Rotate your shoulders and your hips to "snap" them towards the target. Bring the ball hand forward.

    • 5

Release the ball with a snap of the wrist, shifting your weight onto the front foot and pulling back the hand that did not hold the ball. Try to release the ball at the highest point of the forward movement. Follow through by letting your back leg come forward and your throwing arm point all the way to the ground.
