Proper Steps for Throwing a Javelin
-
The Grip
-
With your palm of your hand turned upwards, grip the javelin in the palm comfortably and securely. There are three styles of holding the javelin: American, Finnish and Fork. According to Rob Lasorsa of www.everythingtrackandfield.com, American style consists of gripping the cord between the thumb and index finger. Finnish style has the thrower gripping the cord between the thumb and middle finger, and Fork style consists of gripping the cord between the index and middle finger.
The Run
-
A short strip of track is allowed for javelin throwers to run and build speed which adds force to the throw. Hold the javelin horizontally, elbow high and above shoulder level. Start the run with the non-dominant foot--left foot for right-handed throwers and vice versa. Maintain control of the javelin while you gain speed. Until you are accustomed to the length of the track, practice the run without the javelin.
The Setup and Throw
-
One of the most important, and most difficult, factors in the javelin throw is the setup. For right-handed throwers, the right leg is what generates the power for your throw. For left-handed throwers, it is the left leg. As you approach the line, keep your eyes focused up field. As you get to the line, firmly plant the non-dominant foot and release the javelin over that foot. It is important that the throwing hand be as high as possible at its release point. This will greatly improve the distance of your throw.
