Proper Javelin Throwing Technique
-
Grip
-
The way to hold the javelin is by placing it in the palm of your hand. You will be throwing it from an overhead position, so as you raise it over your head, the javelin should be balanced in your hand. Wrap your fingers around the javelin as if you were closing your fist. The grip should be firm but not super tight: a six on a scale of one to 10 in grip tightness. Your thumb should be slightly behind your fingers. From this balanced position, you should be able to spin the javelin as you approach your throw and that spin will help keep the javelin in the air.
Run-up
-
The javelin is thrown by holding it over your head, running to the launch point and propelling the javelin in the air. Your approach to the launch point should be consistent every time you throw it. An 11-step approach to the board is considered the best way to throw it. If you are right-handed, start by taking your first step with your left foot. Gather speed as you run and you should be at top speed while still under control as you prepare to throw.
Throw
-
As your drive foot prepares to hit the launching spot, you need to reach back with the javelin in your hand as you get ready to throw it. Once you hit the board, propel the javelin from the overhead position with a smooth delivery that imparts spin. That spin will keep the javelin rotating and gaining distance. As you throw the javelin, lead with your elbow. Once it is released, must pull down hard to get maximum distance.
