How to Install a Bat Grip Wrap

There are two critical pieces of equipment used in a baseball game, aside from the ball itself; the glove and the bat. The baseball bat is the most essential offensive tool. For optimal performance, baseball bats are wrapped with grip tape on the handle. Often, a player also wears batting gloves to increase grip. Over time, grip wrap can wear out or start to unwind. When this occurs, you need to apply new grip wrap.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a mark where the grip wrap stops on the bat so you know how far up the bat to wrap. Unwind the old grip wrap and discard it. Ensure that you remove all of the old wrap.

    • 2

Scrub the bat handle with warm water and adhesive remover. Ensure that you remove all adhesive from the old grip wrap. Dry the bat thoroughly.

    • 3

Sit down and hold the bat between your legs upside down, handle side facing up.

    • 4

Cut the end of the grip wrap at an angle. Stick the cut tape end perpendicular to your bat handle, just under the knob.

    • 5

Wrap around the handle keeping with one continuous piece of tape and overlap each previous wrap slightly by a quarter-inch until you reach your mark. Ensure that you keep the wrap taut as you wrap. Cut the tape and smooth the tape out flat, ensuring that no air pockets formed.

Wrap one small piece of tape just underneath the knob to cover the wrap starting point. Wrap another small piece at your end point to cover the end wrap.
