How to Hold a Wood Baseball Bat

A good swing when playing baseball is crucial so you can strike the ball correctly. If there is tension in your grip, then this could be detrimental to being able to play well. A wooden bat is traditionally used to play baseball, but nowadays aluminum bats are commonly used in nonprofessional leagues. Some players prefer wooden bats, although aluminum gives each strike more power. However, beginners should use a basic grip that involves gripping the bat at the base.

Instructions

    • 1

Relax your body. If there is tension in your joints or muscles then this will affect your grip. A player can respond quicker to balls if his body is at ease.

    • 2

Pick up the wooden bat at the tapered end. This is the thinner end that is held by the player's hands. The other end strikes the ball.

    • 3

Hold it with two hands. If you are right handed, place your left hand at the base of the bat and your right hand on top.

    • 4

Twist your left hand around so that your knuckles are facing forward, and then line up the knuckles on your right hand with these.

    • 5

Check at what point of your hand the wooden baseball bat is held. It should be held between the fingers, and not entirely within the palms of your hands.

    • 6

Grip the bat firmly, but maintain a relaxed body position. Practice swinging with different strengths of grip --- work out how much pressure you can hold the bat with, while retaining a natural swing.

    • 7

Use a choking-up grip once you are confident in using a basic grip. Simply grip the bat as described in steps 1 to 6, and then move your hands further up the bat. This gives the bat more balance for you to control it more easily.
