How to Play Circle in Baseball

The circle game in baseball is a drill that allows players to use hand-eye coordination to field ground balls while they're on the move. The game is played at a high speed, with players moving at all times, which requires a good degree of stamina, and, with the added element of having to catch a fast-rolling baseball that may bounce or curve, concentration is integral. Once the players master the circle game, their ability to field grounders will be improved.

Instructions

    • 1

Align the players in a circle, with the players standing about an arm's length away from the players beside them. Four or five players is all that's necessary, but more players -- an entire baseball team -- make for a perfect game of circle.

    • 2

Tell the players to assume the appropriate stance for fielding a ground ball, as circle is a ground ball drill.

    • 3

Start the ball at the 12 o'clock position and roll it across to the player at the 6 o'clock position.

    • 4

Instruct the players to circle clockwise as the ball is rolled back and forth from the player in the 12 o'clock position to the player in the 6 o'clock position. Every player will reach both positions at multiple points during the game.

    • 5

Change the players' direction to move counterclockwise as they roll the ball.

Alternate back and forth between clockwise and counterclockwise.
