How to Coach a Baseball League

Coaching a team in a baseball league offers a parent the opportunity to instruct developing players in the game they love, while also offering a great opportunity to spend more time with their children on the team. When dealing with a youth baseball team, a coach must find balance between stressing the fundamentals that will help the team win and emphasizing fun for the players at both practice and games.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrive to practice early, before the first player.

    • 2

Know your plans for each practice before you arrive. Organized sessions allow for maximum efficiency.

    • 3

Enjoy yourself on the field and show the enjoyment externally so your players can tell you want to be there helping them.

    • 4

Work with the children and run drills with energy. Coaches that seem to be plodding along as if they don't have the energy or desire to be there are likely to lose the interest of their players.

    • 5

Run an efficient practice, with minimal time spent with players left standing around or unsure of what they are doing.

    • 6

Treat the players with respect when dealing with them, particularly with young players who will rebel against coaches that treat them as children.

    • 7

Keep practice fun by utilizing contests in drills so that kids view them as games, not drills.
