How to Do a Finger Roll
In basketball, a layup, in which you bounce the ball off the backboard into the net, is one of the most fundamental and effective ways to score. The finger roll is a modified version of the layup, though the backboard is not used in this type of shot. It requires more athleticism than a layup because you have to leap off your feet and extend your arms above your defender to properly execute the shot. Performed effectively, it adds a shot to your arsenal that is hard to block.

1
Dribble and drive towards the hoop. Ensure that you are gaining speed as you approach the basket.
-
2
Jump off your feet with the ball in one hand, using the same underhanded motion you would to perform a layup. A conventional jump shot uses an overhand motion, with your knuckles facing you. The finger roll, however, requires an underhanded motion, with your palms underneath the ball.
-
3
Extend your shooting arm and hand to their fullest extent toward the rim and snap your wrist without moving your arm. Roll the ball to your fingertips and spin it high in the air and into the basket.
