How to Make a Fast-Break Layup

A fast break in basketball occurs when the offense runs the ball up the court before the defenders have a chance to take their spots. On some fast breaks, the defenders are far behind the ball. On others, though, the defenders are running along with the player who has the ball. While the ball handler often can end the fast break with a layup, the player must be prepared to shoot the layup on the run.

Instructions

Dribble the ball with your dominant hand as you run up the court. If you can dribble with both hands, choose the hand on the side of your body opposite the defender. So if the defender is running on your left side, for example, dribble with your right hand.

Angle toward the basket as you run. If you are dribbling with your right hand, go toward the right side of the hoop. Go to the left side if you are dribbling with your left hand.

    • 3

Pick up the ball when you are about two steps away from the basket. Jump off your left foot if you are approaching the hoop from the right side, or your right foot if you are approaching from the left.

    • 4

Hold the ball in your right hand if you are on the right side of the basket, your left hand if you are on the left side of the basket. Extend that arm toward the hoop. Using the correct hand makes it less likely a defender will block the shot and helps keep the ball from hitting the rim on the way up.

Allow your momentum to carry you toward the basket. Release the ball just before you pass underneath the hoop. The ball should hit the backboard at such an angle that it goes into the hoop.
