How to Dribble Like Allen Iverson

Over the course of his career, the sometimes controversial, oft-embattled Allen Iverson was known primarily for his crossover dribble. He was also a perennial scoring leader, but his signature dribbling move was nearly impossible to defend while he was in his prime. In fact, during a game in his 1996-97 rookie season, he famously made Michael Jordan look silly after using his trademark move. It's a move that is emulated by an entire generation of young players, but often with little success. With a broken down, methodical approach and plenty of practice, however, you can learn how to do it.

Learn the basic fundamentals of dribbling. Before you can begin to attempt to emulate Iverson's ball-handling ability, you should have the basics mastered. If you are a beginner, start by learning how to dribble the ball up the court without looking down at it. This should eventually become second nature. Also, hone your dribbling skills with your nonshooting hand, as being ambidextrous on the court will make you much better.

Practice the basic crossover in slow motion. Start with your nonshooting hand, as the Web site Basketball Tips & Info points out. For example, if you are right-handed, begin with your left. Have a friend act as the defender if you can, or simply imagine a defender in front of you. When the defender approaches, move your body to the left along with your head. When your opponent commits to your left side, bounce the ball to the right and drive by. The key is to start slowly and work your way up to speed.

Once you're comfortable doing the crossover dribble from one side, practice starting with the other hand and moving the opposite direction. If you are right-handed, start from the right this time. This is where being ambidextrous on the court will help you. If defenders know you can crossover from both directions, they'll be more tentative with their stance, which will make them that much easier to get by on your way to the basket.
