How to Swish Every Shot

The term "swish" in basketball refers to when a player shoots the ball and it goes directly into the net. The ball doesn't touch the rim or the backboard, so the net actually makes a swishing noise. Achieving a "swish" every time a player shoots takes a combination of perfect mechanics and practice. By practicing every day, your body will feel more comfortable with the fluid motion needed for these shots and it will become natural. It doesn't matter how expensive your sneakers are when trying to swish a shot, just that you have solid mechanics.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand on the free-throw line facing the hoop with your feet shoulder-width apart. Make sure you are balanced and relaxed.

    • 2

Grab the basketball and get a good grip. Spread out the fingers on your dominant hand. Only your fingertips should be gripping the ball.

    • 3

Place the other, non-dominant hand on the side of the ball for support. The dominant hand will push the ball while the other hand guides it.

    • 4

Bend your knees. Raise your arms and elbows to a 90-degree angle. Focus on the back of the basketball hoop.

    • 5

Keep your shooting arm straight while extending your knees and extending your forearm. Your focus and aim should always be on the back of the net.

    • 6

Release the ball while the rest of your body extends. Snap the wrist on your dominant hand to create one fluid motion. Jump upon releasing the ball, if doing so feels more natural.

    • 7

Watch the basketball glide to the hoop. The ball should swish into the net, not hitting the rim or the backboard. If done correctly, the basketball should bounce right back to you.
