1
Stand on the high side of the post player and keep one hand up to deny the pass when the ball is above the free throw line. Use the other arm to prevent the other player from posting you up and establishing position.

2
Stand on the low side of a post player when the ball is below the free throw line and use your hands and arms in the same way as you would if the ball was above the free throw line. Keep your legs planted and don't let the big man use his strength to get position close to the basket.

Anticipate which way the offensive player will turn and seal off that side of the court. Postoffense.com notes that a good hook shot will involve the offensive player turning his non-shooting shoulder toward the basket when he shoots. Beating him to the spot ensures that if he tries to shoot a hook shot, it will be extremely difficult for him to do so.

Use help defenders from the weak side to prevent post players from getting in position to shoot a hook shot. Weak-side help defenders can clog the lane for the offense, making it difficult for opponents to either make an entry pass or attempt a shot. (Source 3)

Double-team the post once the player gets the ball by having the primary defender take away the pivot to the baseline and the help defender standing in the lane. This forces the ball out of the post into a more difficult 3-point shot. (Source 4)
