How to Play a 3-2 Zone Defense

Zone defenses are used in basketball to ensure that certain areas of the court are always covered. This is in contrast to a man-to-man defense which strives to defend each individual player on the other team. The 3-2 defense requires three players to act as the front line of defense, while two other players cover the area beneath the basket. The front three players are typically both guards and the small forward. The center and power forward play closer to the basket.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin with the point guard playing at the top of the key (this is the semicircle on the floor just above the free throw line.) The other guard and the small forward are positioned just behind the point guard, on either side of the free throw line. The power forward and center are directly behind the previous two players, forming a box.

    • 2

Rotate according to the movement of the ball. If the ball moves to one side, but still above the free throw line, then the small forward or guard on that side moves to defend. The point guard moves into the position that the other player vacated, maintaining the original box formation.

    • 3

Rotate when the ball moves to an offensive player near the basket. Movement of the ball below the free throw line results in the nearest forward moving out to cover, while the other forward fills his spot. The guards rotate toward the player with the ball to make passing more difficult.
