      Remain patient when you play against a zone defense in ultimate Frisbee. One of the main tactics of a zone defense is to try to frustrate an offense. The zone defense will sit back and wait for the offense to become impatient and make a mistake. To defeat this defense you must remain patient and take what the zone gives you on each play.

      Have your receivers find holes in the zone defense with enough room to make a catch. Every zone has holes in it no matter how well the other team executes the defense. In a zone defense, the opposing players cover an area and not a player. The trick is finding these holes and completing a toss.

      Recognize the zone defense early to effectively play against it in ultimate Frisbee. If you do not realize the other team is playing zone quickly enough, it can spell defeat. To recognize a zone defense you need to watch how the defenders react when a receiver moves into their area. If the defender follows the receiver during a play then the team is probably not playing zone. However, if the defender does not follow the receiver past a certain point and then hands off the receiver to another defender, then they are probably playing zone.

      Send three or four receivers deep and run the rest underneath the zone. This will often confuse the team playing zone defense. At the very least, you will be able to complete a short toss easily and at best, you can complete a deep scoring play.
