How to Make Cuts in Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate Frisbee is a popular game, especially on college campuses. Many people that play the game only know the basic rules, but there are numerous strategies employed by competitive players that can make a team more effective. One of the most basic strategies in Ultimate is making cuts; that is, getting open so that you can receive a pass.

Instructions

    • 1

Sprint toward an area of open space on the field where there is a direct line between you and the handler (the person holding the disc) that is not occupied by anyone else.

    • 2

Make a sudden change of direction, running at top speed toward the handler. The player covering you will be left slightly behind, so you are free to receive a pass as you approach the handler.

    • 3

If the handler does not pass to you, get out of the way quickly to free up the lane you just used and look for an open area of space in a straight line away from the handler. Jog a little bit, then make a cut straight away from the handler.

    • 4

Continue a cycle of cutting to and away from the disc as your team moves the disc up the field.
