How to Do a World's Greatest in Ultimate Frisbee

In ultimate Frisbee, players attempt to pass a disc between their team without dropping it or throwing it out of bounds until they reach a scoring end zone. Most of the time, throwing a disc out of bounds results in an automatic turnover. As indicated by its name, the world's greatest is a challenging maneuver in which a disc that has crossed the out-of-bounds line can be saved and kept in play.

Instructions

    • 1

Position yourself close to the sideline and wait for a pass that goes wide, crossing over the out-of-bounds line. In ultimate, the line itself is out of bounds, so make sure not to step on it.

    • 2

Get a running start and jump from in bounds, over the out-of-bounds line toward the wayward disc.

    • 3

While in the air, cradle the disc with one hand and pull it across your body, redirecting it and using its momentum to throw it back into play--preferably toward one of your teammates. It is essential that you cradle the disc and impart some of its momentum into your throw, because it is very difficult to generate enough power to throw the disc into play in midair and you don't have much time to wind up a throw because you must release the disc before your feet hit the ground.

    • 4

Get back in bounds and make a cut up the sideline to get open for the person you passed to.
