Terminology in Ultimate Frisbee
-
Backhand
-
The backhand is the standard throw for most ultimate Frisbee players. The player holds the disc with the thumb underneath and the rest of the fingers on top. During the release, the arm is extended across the left side of the body.
Bid
-
A bid is a failed attempt to block or steal the disc from the other team. The defensive team usually engages in bidding as they attempt to regain control of the disc from the opposing offense.
Clearing
-
Clearing is when the offensive team spreads out from an area to make it easier to successfully pass the disc. If any one spot on the field becomes too clogged, it can make movement and passing difficult.
Cut
-
A cut is when a player attempts to break free of the defense to receive a pass. After a failed cut, an experienced player clears the area the thrower is aiming for so that another teammate can intercept the disc.
Flow
-
A flow is a series of successful cuts and passes that lead to an easy score. Flows are usually characterized by quick, short passes that the defensive team fails to disrupt.
Forehand
-
Also known as a flick, the forehand throw is different from the backhand in that the arm never crosses the body. The disc is propelled by a quick flick of the wrist.
Handler
-
The handler is the person in possession of the disc. The handler is always on the offensive team.
Poach
-
A poach occurs when a defensive player moves away from the person they are defending to intercept the disc from another person. Individuals that attempt to poach are always on the defensive team.
Scurvy
-
A scurvy is a play in which the handler fakes out his defender so effectively that he believes the disc has already been thrown. This can help the handler by giving him a chance to pass the disc if the defender moves away after the fake out.
Swing
-
A swing is a lateral pass that does not push the disc further down the field. Lateral passes are used when the handler cannot make a successful down-field pass and instead chooses to give the disc to a teammate that is better situated to do so.
