What Does Clearing Mean in Ultimate Frisbee?
-
What Is Clearing?
-
Clearing is a play that involves the offensive team players moving away from the area for which the thrower is aiming. It is named as such because the idea is to "clear" an area of the field to make a pass easier.
Why Clear?
-
Clearing is a useful play because it makes it makes a successful pass more likely; when an area of the field is clogged by other players, the thrower has a difficult time making a clean pass that is clearly meant for one person.
When to Clear?
-
Offensive players should clear an area when they are unable to successfully escape the defense so that they can get open. Breaking away from the defense is known as a "cut." Clearing is important after a failed cut.
How to Clear
-
Players can clear an area by moving farther down the field and spreading out in preparation for the next pass. As they clear an area, offensive players should continue to attempt to cut to get open.
