Techniques for Shooting Basketballs
-
B is for Balance
-
First, make sure you have good balance. You want your feet a comfortable distance from each other, not too far apart and not too close. Start with your feet shoulder-width apart and adjust until you feel most comfortable. Move one foot -- the same side as your shooting hand -- slightly in front of the other. Bend your knees slightly and keep your head over your hips. Avoid leaning forward or backward.
E is for Eyes
-
Second, keep your eyes on the target. When you are shooting a jump shot, you want to look at the front of the rim. Avoid following the ball with your eyes. Look at the rim before and during your shot.
E is for Elbow
-
Third, keep your elbow straight. You want your elbow directly under the ball. By aligning your elbow properly, you will keep your shot straight. Avoid having your elbow stick out to the side; this will make it difficult to hold the ball and will create a sideways spin on the shot.
F is for Follow Through
-
Fourth, follow through after your shot. Flick your shooting wrist when you release the ball and hold it. Think about the rim as a cookie jar -- you want to reach your hand up and in. Following through will give the ball good back spin and will give you more control over your shot.
