Basketball Shooting Games for Kids

A great way to get kids up and moving is to give them an activity that is fun and competitive. Basketball has a wide selection of shooting games for kids that can both improve their ability and keep them competing while having fun. The best part about basketball shooting games is that they can be done with large groups or with just one other person. Some games can even be played with only one person who wants to add a challenge to just practicing shooting.
  1. Around the World

    • This is a game that combines shooting from different locations on the court and also has a challenging part that tests kids' self confidence. This game can be played with only one player or many players. There is no limit of players.

The object of the game is for a player to shoot from and make shots from all of the spots around the key (or the paint). The game can also be played from any other determined areas, as long as the areas are known and agreed upon before the game starts. The first player that can shoot and make shots from all the spots and back again wins.

The first spot is directly to the side of the basket, in the first slot of the key, right below the block. The key is marked by checkmarks that are used in games for players to stand during the taking of a free throw. For around the world these slots represent the areas from where players will shoot. There are four slots on each side and the free throw line, totaling nine spots that players must make shots from. The player must make all the shots in a row without missing or they return to the first slot. But, anytime a player is shooting from a slot that isn't the first shot and they miss, they have two options. The first is to stay at that slot and wait until all the other players have their turns and it becomes their turn again. The second option is to 'risk it' and take a second shot to continue playing. If the player makes the shot on the second attempt, the player continues. If the player misses the shot, the player returns back to the starting point. The first player to shoot and make shots from all the slots and return back has gone around the world and is the winner.

    PIG

    • The game of PIG involves being creative and challenging other players to match your ability. A player does a specific move or type of shot or takes a shot in a specific way or from at specific spot on the court and if he makes the shot, the next player must complete the same shot, from the same location, in the same way or style and make it, or he will get a letter. The first letter a player gets is the letter "P". Each time a player cannot complete a made shot, he will get another letter until the letters spell the word, "PIG". The first player to get PIG loses. If the first player misses his shot attempt, then the second player gets to create a shot and if he makes it, the first player must match. This game can be played with more than two players and the only variance is that each player in order will have to make the made shot unless the player who shoots before him misses. If the 3rd player in a game of five misses the shot that the first player and second player made, then the 3rd player gets a letter and the fourth player creates a new shot. If everyone in the game makes the shot and it comes back to the original player who created the shot, then the originator gets a letter and the next person in order gets to create a new shot.

    Knockout

    • The game of knockout is the fastest moving shooting game for kids. It can be played with a minimum of two players or an unlimited number. The players line up one behind another forming a line at either the free throw line or the the three-point line. There are two balls for this game. The object of the game is to shoot and make your shot before the person behind you shoots and makes their shot. If this happens, you've been knocked out of the game. The game starts with the first player shooting from the designated spot. If the player misses the shot, he must chase down the ball and make a shot, any shot, before the player behind them makes his shot. The second player in line can shoot as soon as the ball leaves the hands of the player shooting before him. After making a shot and not being knocked out the player must pass his ball to the next player in line waiting to shoot and then get back in line at the end of the line. The game continues until there is only one player left who has not been knocked out.
