How to Winterize Portable Basketball Goals
Protecting your portable basketball hoop/goal during winter is essential to keep your hoop in top condition for play during summer months. Winterizing will keep the plastic base from cracking, protect the net from freezing and getting brittle, and reduce the risk of your basketball hoop from falling over and breaking in the process.
Things You'll Need
- Sand
- Plastic trash bags
- Tape
Instructions

1
Remove the water from your basketball hoop's base. Remove the cap on the base and tilt your basketball hoop over till all the water pours out.
-
2
Fill your basketball base with sand. The sand will not freeze during the winter like the water. The base will also become more stable and less likely to fall over from a gust of wind.
-
3
Remove your basketball net. Store your basketball net indoors, dry it before storing if it's wet.
-
4
Cover the basketball backboard with a large trash bag. If the bag is not big enough, tape multiple bags together. Secure the bags to the metal post using tape.
