What is a Backcourt Violation?
-
Eight-second Violation
-
A team must get the ball past the half court within eight seconds. Under the guidelines of the National Basketball Association (NBA), players only have a total of eight seconds to advance the ball past the half-court line. If a player, or team, fails to do so, the ball is automatically awarded to the opposite team due to the backcourt violation.
Crossing The Line
-
Once a basketball team has advanced the ball beyond the half-court line, it must remain on that side of the court until they lose possession. If a player passes the ball back over the half-court line, it is a backcourt violation, and the opposing team is awarded the ball.
Exceptions
-
Under some circumstances, the ball may travel back over the half-court line. Exceptions to the rule exist in regard to the ball ending up beyond the half-court line after it has crossed it. For example, if one team has possession of the basketball and a defender knocks the ball away, causing it to travel back beyond the half-court line, the team that lost possession may retrieve the ball without violation.
