How to Play with a Nose Guard

Nose injuries are a common occurrence in contact sports. A quality nose guard is designed to allow players to continue playing as they recover from their injuries. A nose guard may look like a cumbersome piece of equipment, but a properly fitted nose guard should feel like a second skin, eventually. Even custom-fitted nose guards take a little while to get used to. That's why its important to practice to learn how to play with your nose guard, so it is not a distraction.

Fit your nose guard correctly. There are two general types of nose guards: "one-size-fits-most" and custom. If you are purchasing a one-size-fits-most nose guard with adjustable straps, have the clerk help you to learn to fit it correctly before you leave the store. When worn correctly, the nose guard will fit comfortably on your face and not impede your peripheral field of vision. If you cannot find a comfortable fit with an adjustable nose guard, invest in a custom nose guard. Self-molding kits are available for a modest price. A professional orthotist can mold and fit one for you for a much more personalized fit, but also a much higher price.

Wear your nose guard whenever you are practicing, even if you're practicing alone. Even a custom-made nose guard takes some getting used to. The more you practice with your nose guard, the more natural playing with it will feel.

Wear your nose guard in every game.

    • 4

Wash your nose guard with a mild soap solution or according to the method recommended by the manufacturer after every game and practice.

Stop wearing the mask only when your doctor tells you that it is OK to do so. And even after that, you may choose to continue to wear it. After your nose has been broken once, it is likely to break again. And multiple breaks can require nasal reconstructive surgery to fix.
