How to Break the Backboard in Basketball

One of the most eye-catching and dangerous plays in basketball happens by accident. In rare occasions, a player will charge toward the basket in position for a slam dunk, then jump in the air, grab the rim and pull it right out of the backboard. This results in the backboard shattering into pieces, causing glass bits to fall to the ground. It usually takes either a strong person or a weak backboard to cause this, though there are ways to facilitate the process.

Select a suitable basketball net. Hoops attached to metal or fiberglass backboards generally don't shatter. Instead, the hoop simply bends downward when pulled excessively. A glass backboard is easily the most breakable of the bunch. These are commonly found in school gymnasiums or public-use sports facilities.

Set up the trampoline and safety mats in front of the basket. The location of the trampoline will depend on the length of your running start and the speed with which you approach the basket. The mats should rest directly under the basket, since this is where you will land. Take a few practice runs without the ball to ensure the trampoline is in the correct spot.

Attempt a slam dunk. Take a comfortable run at the trampoline--not so fast that you lose control and balance, but not so slow that you won't achieve the desired height or distance. When you jump onto the trampoline, ensure that your body is straight and you have the ball securely in your hands. As you grab on to the rim, pull with all your might for two to three seconds before letting go and falling on the mat. If it doesn't work the first time, continue to make attempts until successful.
