Basketball Shooting Games in PE

Physical education (PE) classes must combine fun games with the teaching of a sport. Although basketball is an extremely fun game, it can be difficult for beginners or younger students. As a result, basketball shooting games for PE are highly effective at familiarizing students with the techniques and concepts of the sport, while simultaneously creating a fun and productive environment.
  1. Basketball Golf

    • Basketball golf is played using the same basic rules as golf. Instead of holes, basketball golf uses locations on the court. Each player is given a piece of paper and a pencil to record the scores. Select nine locations on the court, evenly distributed throughout. Each student shoots from a location until a shot is made, allowing no more than five attempts. The number of shots taken is recorded for that particular location. This is repeated for every student at each spot. The student with the lowest total score—or number of shots—is the winner. The game teaches students the basics of basketball and gets them familiar with the concepts of shooting. Prior to playing, the students should warm-up for a few minutes with jumping jacks and stretches.

    Knockout

    • Knockout teaches students proper shooting technique and form. Instruct the students to make a line at the free throw line. Each student will take one shot from the line. If the player makes a shot, he goes to the back of the line. If the player misses, he is knocked out of the game if the next shooter makes the shot. Otherwise, the player moves to the back of the line. This game combines basketball with a bit of competition. Students will become accustomed to shooting a basketball and will improve their fitness. The students that are knocked out can play a different basketball game on the other side of the court until Knockout finishes.

    Basketball Grab the Bacon

    • This game is a variation of the popular "Grab the Bacon" game. The class is divided into two teams, each of which occupies a different end of the basketball court under the hoop. Each student on each team is assigned a number. Place two basketballs in the center of the court and randomly call out a number. The player from each team who was assigned this particular number races to the center to grab one of the balls and rushes back to his team's basket. The first player to make a basket will earn his team a point. At the end of the class period, the team with the most points is named the winner. The game is very fun and exciting for the students. Players are determined to get their team a point. As a result, the game provides great aerobic exercise for the class.
