Basketball Camp Objectives

Any aspiring hoops star would be well served by attending a basketball camp at some point in his life. With camps held at all times of the year around the world, there is no excuse for a basketball fanatic to miss out on an opportunity to bond with other ballers. Participants will also take plenty of lessons away from a visit to a basketball camp.
  1. Offensive Skill Development

    • The primary focus of a basketball camp is to help players strengthen their all-around games, a process that begins with honing the athletes' offensive talents. This is done through a combination of one-on-one drills and full-team scrimmages. Players fine-tune their fundamentals according to the positions they play. A guard would work on things like ball-handling, dribbling, passing and footwork, while taller players like forwards and centers would focus more on positioning and offensive rebounding. All players are encouraged to sharpen their scoring touch through a variety of shooting drills, including free throw sessions. By the time the players engage in scrimmages, it is hoped that they have improved their primary skillsets, and have learned new tricks they can use in a game setting.

    Defensive Skill Development

    • Learning how to play defense is a critical component of participating in a basketball camp. Players are taken through different offensive scenarios and shown the best way to properly defend their position in each instance. Several of the same tools learned during offensive skill development, primarily endurance and footwork, come into play during defensive drills. Players will also learn how to properly stay in front of their man, how to properly guard a man without the ball and how to defend more complex offensive setups. Guards are encouraged to work on using their hands to defend without drawing fouls, while forwards and centers are taught the art of blocking shots, taking charges and defensive rebounding.

    Teamwork

    • Aside from improved fundamentals, the real value in a basketball camp is the emphasis on teamwork. Coaches encourage players to focus on winning as a team rather than excelling as individuals, and will even engage the participants in some team building exercises. Even in more serious basketball camps, where players tend to train harder and the scrimmages are more competitive, coaches are diligent in ensuring that players defer to teammates, play defense and hustle all the time. One on one showdowns are still emphasized and encouraged, as long as they don't come at the expense of team unity.
