How to Run Basketball Drills

Like every sport, basketball has its own specific set of drills that are meant to increase skill level at the different aspects of the game. Basketball drills are run successfully by coaches at every level during practice, and these drills ensure that their players are ready for the different actions during each game. It is important to know the right ways to run these drills to begin a successful basketball team.

      Include many dozens of repetitions for every fundamental. Drills can include the following: shooting balls from spots across the court, passing balls to and from different spots, dribbling around cones at different speeds and defending each offensive move.

      Do drills at full speed to ensure that your players can perform all of the fundamentals in game conditions.

      Do drills at moderate and slow speeds to ensure that your players are correctly performing the fundamentals with all of the necessary actions and movements.

      Conduct role playing drills where one player acts as a defender and one as an offensive player.

      Conduct drills that place players in real game situations with each fundamental. You can have players practice a shot with a defender on them, pass to another player in a certain position, rebound over another player or guard an offensive position.

      Conduct drills with and without a basketball to ensure your players are focusing on fundamentals as well as ball handling.
