How to Do Basketball Block Out Drills

Defensive rebounding is an extremely important concept to instill in young players when coaching basketball. The key to defensive rebounding is finding where your opponent is on the court and boxing them out. Running a boxing out drill is very simple once you know how to teach the basics to the kids and give them proper instructions. Boxing out drills can be one-on-one situations where you shoot and one player has to box out another, or it can be an entire 5-on-5 situation where you shoot and each player must box out another player.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide the team into defensive and offensive players. The defensive players are in charge of blocking out. Have one line of defensive players and one line of offensive players.

    • 2

Tell one defensive player and one offensive player to get into the paint. Shoot the ball at the hoop, and award one point to whichever team (offensive or defensive) comes up with the rebound, then have the next two players in line go.

    • 3

Instruct proper box out procedure. Tell your defensive players to get down low with knees bent and arms out. Tell them to drive their rear end into the offensive player, pushing the offensive player away from the hoop. Have them keep their hands up shoulder height when getting ready to rebound, and to jump up as high as they can to snatch the rebound with both hands.

    • 4

Put five offensive players and five defensive players on the court. Have the players move around as they normally would during an offensive possession while you dribble around the court. At a random spot, stop and shoot at the basket. Tell the defense that when this happens, it is their job to yell out, "Shot!". The defenders should then all find their man and box out. Again, award a point to whichever team comes up with the ball.
