How to Mount Speedplays to Sidi Shoes

Turning a Sidi cycling shoe over reveals a combination of holes. These holes allow you to attach various designs of cleat, including those produced by Speedplay. Speedplay cleats feature a unique design that allows the cleat to engage Speedplay brand pedals. Each cleat assembly includes a plastic base plate, spring housing, metal bottom plate and assorted shims and screws. Assembling these pieces correctly to ensure you safely use the Speedplay cleat system.

Instructions

    • 1

Orient the plastic base plate so that the shims on one side face the underside of the Sidi shoe. Align the three holes on the base plate with the three holes in the sole of the shoe.

    • 2

Observe the side of the base plate to see that it lays flat against the sole of the shoe. Sidi shoes with a non-standard curvature of the sole may require use of the extra set of shims. These shims are labeled "4F" and "4R" or "3F" and "3R." To use these shims, pry the standard shims out of the base plate and snap the new ones in place. After switching, check once again that the base plate lays flat.

    • 3

Select the three black mounting screws. Thread the first screw into any one of the three mounting holes.

    • 4

Tighten the screw using a #2 Phillips screwdriver. Tighten the screw just enough to hold the base plate in place. If the black screw fails to engage the shoe adequately, swap the black screws for the longer, silver ones.

    • 5

Lay the proper spring housing atop the base plate. One spring housing is labeled "LEFT," the other "RIGHT." Orient the housing so that the "LEFT" or "RIGHT" designation faces the inside of the shoe.

    • 6

Align the holes in the underside of the metal bottom plate with the pins protruding from the spring housing. Be sure to use the correct metal bottom plate. If the plate does not match the pins, use the other plate. Plates are compatible with one or the other spring housing.

    • 7

Thread each of the four cleat fastening screws into the four slots atop the metal bottom plate. Tighten the screws just enough to hold the cleat assembly in place.

    • 8

Adjust the side-to-side position of the cleat assembly to suit personal preference. If convenient, mount your bicycle and check the alignment by clipping in out the Speedplay pedal. Adjust the side-to-side position of the cleat so that neither the toe nor the heel of the Sidi shoe strike the bicycle crank.

    • 9

Tighten the four cleat fastening screws to the point of resistance. Finsh tightening with a 1/4 turn.
