What Are SPD Cleats?
-
Function
-
A product of Shimano, SPD is short for "Shimano Pedaling Dynamics." Part of the SPD system includes a specially designed cleat and shoe. The cleat attaches to the bottom of the shoe. Used in conjunction with an SPD pedal, the cleat binds the shoe to the pedal platform. The system allows the foot to remain firmly affixed to the pedal for improved control and power transfer.
Attachment
-
The SPD cleat includes two screws and a cleat adapter for attachment to the shoe. To attach the cleat, point the triangular end of the cleat forward, and align the cleat opening with the screw holes in the bottom of the shoe. Place the cleat adapter in the recess atop the cleat. Finally, attach the two screws through the the cleat using a 4 mm Allen wrench. Before tightening these screws, adjust the cleat as necessary.
Adjustment
-
Proper placement of an SPD cleat upon the shoe is critical to performance and personal comfort. The SPD shoe provides an adjustment range of 20 mm front to back and 5 mm of side to side. This adjustment range allows the cyclist to find a suitable position for the cleat to engage the pedal. For a general position, place the cleat beneath the ball of the foot. Angle the cleat so that neither the toe nor the heel strikes the pedal arm during pedaling.
Operation
-
Attachment and detachment of the cleat to and from the pedal require know-how and practice. To engage the pedal, press the tip of the cleat into the pedal binding and push the heel down. The cleat "clicks" into place. To disengage the foot from the pedal, angle the toe in toward the bicycle and pull the foot back smoothly. Before disengaging the second foot, place the first foot firmly on even ground and with the bicycle's brake engaged.
