How to Remove Downtube Shifter Cables
Look at almost any bicycle that has shifters and hand brakes, and you see cables running down some of the bicycle frame's tubes. The downtube is the tube that extends out and down from the stem near the handlebars. Most frames have small guides brazed or welded onto the frame specifically for running cables and housings. Cables often get stretched from use and require replacement. When it is time to replace the cables, you have to remove the old ones first.
Things You'll Need

1
Look under the bicycle downtube to find the cables. Follow the cables to the derailleur and shifter. Unscrew the cable barrel, which is a black dial that attaches to the shifter end or the derailleur.
-
2
Pop out the round metal cam on the top of the cable from the shifter or back end of the derailleur.
-
3
Pull the cable out from the shifter and derailleur and, moving in one direction, begin taking the cable out of the welded cable guides under the downtube. If the cables stick, cut them near the guides using the cutter.
-
4
Push a flat screwdriver into the cable to push it out of the guides if they stick.
