How to Install a Single Speed Cog

Installing a single speed cog, also known as a freewheel, is a simple process that requires no tools. A standard single speed cog attaches to a bicycle wheel by screwing onto the external threads of a hub (the wheel's axle). All you will need to do is screw the freewheel on as you would screw the cap onto a jar. The final tightening will occur by "foot power," as soon as you ride up your first hill.

Clean the hub with degreaser. A used hub is frequently coated with grease from the bicycle chain, as well as salts or debris from the road. Spray degreaser on the hub, making sure to focus on the external threading, and clean it with a rag. Make sure the threads are completely dry before proceeding.

Grease the external threads of the hub. This will allow for easy removal of the cog in the future, and will not compromise the safety of the hub.

Screw on your single speed cog. Do this by lining the cog up with the hub's external threading before turning clockwise to screw it on until snug. Do not worry about getting the cog perfectly tight; as you ride the bike, your pedaling effort finishes the tightening process.

Go for a ride. As you apply pressure to the single speed cog, it will finish tightening. Then your cog will not come loose and will be safe to ride.
