How to Remove a SRAM Powerlink

Bicycle chains require occasional servicing, and this may necessitate removing the chain from the bicycle. SRAM's Powerlink design of chains includes a single link that can be opened and closed repeatedly and without the use of any tools. Opening this link allows removal of the chain from the bicycle for replacement or servicing. Learn the correct method for separating a SRAM Powerlink for hassle-free removal of the chain.

Instructions

    • 1

Switch the front gear shifter to shift the chain onto the smallest front chain wheel. Visually, this moves the chain closer to the inside of the bike. Practically, this gives the chain increased slack and releases tension on the Powerlink.

    • 2

Use the pedals to rotate the Powerlink section of the chain so that it is positioned midway along the bottom run. Unlike the other links, one of the Powerlink's rivets has an extra groove so the rivet may slide in and out of the link. Positioning the SRAM Powerlink midway along the bottom run allows for unimpeded access to the Powerlink.

    • 3

Position both index fingers on the backside of the Powerlink and both thumbs on the front side. Squeeze both the Powerlink plates together.

    • 4

Use your thumbs to slide the plates together.

    • 5

Pull the front plate away from the back plate to separate the bicycle chain.

    • 6

Grab the front half of the the SRAM Powerlink chain. Pull the chain toward the front of the bicycle until the chain is removed from the bicycle.
