1
Examine your BMX brakes to see whether your brake pads are in the correct position. The pads should have full contact with the rim of your tire. If they are not getting the maximum contact, adjust the pads accordingly.
-
2
Swap your regular BMX brake with a larger, softer brake pad. This will give more braking surface with a gentler braking effect.
-
3
Switch to chrome tire rims. These give you a better braking surface than regular rims.
-
4
Look at your brake calipers to see if they are the same distance from the rim. If they are not, adjust the caliper arms by loosening the nut that holds it in place and move the arm to your desired position. Tighten the nut when you are done adjusting. If the arm does not spring back when you release the brake, try loosening the nut a bit as it is most likely too tight.

5
Adjust U-brakes by first loosening the Allen bolts on the brake until it loosens the spring a bit. Loosen the straddle piece and adjust the cable length until the cable moves properly when engaged but does not hang lose. Tighten the bolts back up when you are finished.
