Cycling is a popular activity among people of all ages. From a toddler on a tricycle to a professional cyclist, cycling can be an inexpensive way to get some fresh air and exercise. Regardless of the frequency that you ride, a comfortable seat is important. Also known as a saddle, there are many different types of bicycle seats available. It is important to choose a seat that suits your body and riding type. Following a few steps will help you do this.

      Consider a racing seat if you race or ride for long distances. Racing saddles are narrow to enable riders to move their legs faster, as in a race. These seats have a light weight and minimum padding.

      Select a mountain bike seat if you typically do off-road riding. Similar to racing saddles, mountain bike seats are narrow, but have more padding. Generally, they slope slightly forward and have a wider back to accommodate the amount of back and forth movement required in off-road riding.

      Choose a gel seat if you need more padding. Gel saddles provide more cushion and shock absorption, and they conform to your body. Depending on your style of riding, there is probably a gel seat to fit your need. If you typically race or ride off-road, a narrow gel seat should be used. Wider gel seats are available for the more casual rider.

      Select a wide, cushioned bicycle seat if you are a casual or "rails to trails" rider. These seats are wider, specifically in the back. They also have an abundance of padding and some even have a spring suspension system underneath.
