How to Repair a Bicycle Chain Ring

A chain ring is a part of a bicycle's drivetrain, which also includes the crank arms, pedals and chain. These parts move the rear wheel when the rider pedals, thereby moving the bike forward. Depending on the type of bike, it may have three or more chain rings. Whether by an accident or normal wear, a chain ring can become damaged and require replacing.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the right crank arm from the drivetrain. Separating the chain ring makes it easier to work on, especially if there are multiple ones. Loosen and remove the tightening bolt in the center.

    • 2

Pull the chain ring assembly off the bike. If there is only one chain ring, skip to Step 3. If there are multiple chain rings, separate them. Loosen the bolts that hold the chain rings together using an Allen wrench. Make certain to note the position of the chain rings in relation to the crank arm. Some may have bumps to indicate where they line up with the crank arm; if not, use a marker to make a notation.

    • 3

Make certain your replacement chain rings are the same width. While the new chain ring may have a different number of teeth, the width must be the same. Apply some grease to all of the chain ring bolts prior to reassembling them. This repels moisture.

Reassemble the chain rings in the same order that you took them apart. Reattach the chain ring assembly to the crank arm, and then reattach everything to the drivetrain. Do not overtighten any of the bolts. They should be finger-tight and even.
