BMX Bicycle Chain Removal
-
1
Set the chain breaker cradle beneath one of the links along the bottom run of the chain.
-
2
Turn the handle of the chain breaker until the chain breaker drive pin touches the chain rivet.
-
3
Rotate the handle further, gradually driving the rivet from the BMX bicycle chain. The rivet will emerge from the backside of the chain.
-
4
Unscrew the chain breaker handle. Grab either end of the old chain and remove it from the BMX bike.
BMX Bicycle Chain Installation
-
5
Place the old and new chains side by side to compare length. The two should be identical to ensure proper fit of the new chain. If the new chain is longer, cut it down to size, using the chain breaker to remove the unneeded section of links from the chain.
-
6
Loosen the nut at each end of the BMX bicycle's rear wheel axle, using an adjustable wrench.
-
7
Push the rear wheel forward as far as it will go.
-
8
Route the new chain over the rear cog and front sprocket. The chain has two ends, a "male" and "female", designed to interlink. Check that the end of the chain closest to the front sprocket contains the female link. Reverse the chain if necessary.
-
9
Join the two ends of the chain. Push the rivet included with the chain through the hole in the conjoined links. The rivet may have a tapered end, making it easier to introduce into the side of the link.
-
10
Set the chain breaker cradle beneath the conjoined links. Turn the handle to force the chain breaker drive pin against the rivet.
-
11
Drive the rivet into the middle of the chain, permanently joining the two ends of the chain.
-
12
Pull the rear BMX wheel back to remove slack from the chain. Lift the upper run of the chain midway between the front and rear to check for proper tension. The chain should allow for approximately one-half inch of travel. If necessary, slide the wheel forward or backward until chain tension is correct.
-
13
Tighten both axle nuts, using the adjustable wrench.
