How to Install a BMX Chain Adjuster

BMX style bikes use a single, fixed gear and have no derailleurs. Derailleurs do more than shift gears; they add tension to the chain. Because BMX bikes do not have the benefit of the derailleur's chain tensioning, it helps to have a way of removing slack on the BMX chain. This is where a chain adjuster, also known as a tug or tensioner, comes in handy. These devices tighten down on the rear wheel, pulling it back from the bike frame, reducing slack on the chain.

Instructions

    • 1

Flip the bike over and set it on flat ground. Use the seat and handlebars to make a three-point support on the ground.

    • 2

Unscrew the axle nuts on both sides of the rear wheel. These are in the center of the bike wheel. Use a ratchet and socket system. Different bike makers use different nut sizes, so find the suitable socket for this job.

    • 3

Pry the adjuster apart and align the side holes on the adjuster over the axle. Be sure it goes over the axle on both sides.

    • 4

Screw the nuts back onto the axle, securing the adjuster onto the wheel and bicycle.

    • 5

Turn the nuts on each side evenly. Watch the chain to see slack being removed during the tightening process. Stop tightening when you are satisfied with the chain length slack.
