How to Tighten Electra Bicycle Handlebars
Things You'll Need
- 5mm hex key
- Lapping compound

1
Locate the hex key directly in line with the frame's steering tube at the angle of the stem.
-
2
Loosen this bolt using the 5mm hex key. It may require a tap on the bolt to loosen the expander nut inside the steering tube.
-
3
Adjust the height, taking care not to raise the stem to a level where the minimum insertion line is visible.
-
4
Tighten the hex bolt firmly so that there is no play in the stem. If there is still play, it may be that the steering tube or expander bolt is worn. Try adding some lapping compound, available from hardware stores, to increase the friction, but consider replacing the worn parts .
Handlebar Angle
-
5
Locate the hex bolts at the front of the handlebars. These will usually be underneath the handlebars where they meet the stem, though on some models, they may be to the front of the handlebars.
-
6
Check that the handlebars are in the correct position for reach. This is best done while sitting in the saddle. Check that the handlebars are central in the stem, and, if necessary, loosen the handlebar hex bolts.
-
7
Insert the hex key in the hex bolt and tighten firmly.
-
8
Ensure there is no play in the joint between the handlebar and stem. If your handlebars slip even after tightening the hex bolt fully, check that the clamp and handlebar are not damaged, in which case they might need to be replaced. If the components are in good condition, it may be necessary to use some lapping compound between the stem clamp and the handlebar to eliminate any slippage in this joint.
