How to Improve Your Bowling Game When Throwing a Straight Ball

If you are someone who bowls occasionally, just for fun, you most likely throw a straight ball. This technique will work if you aren't looking for the highest score or a competitive edge. If you are looking to develop your skills to a more competitive level, it is important to advance from a simple straight throw and include more technique into your approach.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider the number and formation of the pins. If you are on the first frame and have all the pins to knock down, you can use a slower ball. If you have only a few pins remaining, particularly if they are split, you will need more speed on the ball for a better chance at knocking them down.

    • 2

Consider your approach to the foul line. The approach should include four steps where you bring the ball to your chest in the first step and then lower it and bring it to the release position by your fourth step.

    • 3

Adjust the speed of your approach. The speed the ball travels at depends on the speed of your approach. For a faster ball, you need to approach the foul line faster. For a slower ball, approach it more slowly.

    • 4

Stand straight and keep your shoulders square.

    • 5

Hold the ball from the bottom. This is referred to as the "6 o'clock" position because your hand is positioned where the 6 is on a clock.

    • 6

Pull your arm back to a comfortable release position on your fourth step.

    • 7

Release the ball and immediately turn your hand to the "3 o'clock" position. Do this while your hand is still in contact with the ball. This will create a slight spin on the ball, giving you more control over where it goes.
