How to Crank a Bowling Ball

"Cranking" a bowling ball refers to a bowler putting speed and spin on the ball to make the ball curve towards the center of the pins at the last second. The spin and holding position for cranking a bowling ball comes from the the bowler's wrist. Twisting your wrist, the velocity of the ball and the way in which the ball is held all have something to do with executing a "crank" properly.

Line up slightly to the left of the center of the lane if you're right-handed. Line up slightly to the right side of the center of the lane if you're left-handed. This will give you room to roll your ball to the right or left and have it curve to the center of the lane.

Insert your fingers into the finger holes of your bowling ball. Pick up the ball and rest it in your hand so that your fingers are underneath the ball in a six o'clock position. Roll the ball back into your wrist so it's being held and supported by your hands and your wrist.

Begin your swing. Take a few steps to build momentum and draw the ball back behind you with you elbow slightly bent. Bring your arm forward in a swinging motion as you step toward the foul line, creating velocity and power behind the ball.

Quickly twist your wrist to the four o' clock position, or eight o'clock position for left-handed bowlers, as you release the bowling ball down the lane. Release the bowling ball as it passes your front or planting foot and follow through with your hand.
