Selecting the Correct Bowling Ball

Buying the correct bowling ball involves several factors, including which hand you'll bowl with, hand size, technique, ball weight, ball surface and ball appearance. Several types of balls are available; test as many as possible before making a decision on what works best.

  1. Choosing a Ball

Placement and size of the holes in a bowling ball are key for a comfortable fit.

Decide on a left- or right-handed ball, to determine the placement of the holes. Have the holes drilled where your fingers can easily reach and can comfortably fit.

Determine the proper ball weight. A ball that is too heavy can lead to increased risk of injury. Go to the pro shop at a local bowling alley, pick up a few different size balls, and practice your swing. If your arm hurts afterward, it's too heavy. Also, ask pro shop employees for help in determining the proper ball weight.

Urethane coverstock balls are great for the average bowler.

Look at different surface materials, based on how you'd like your ball to perform. Options include polyester (plastic), urethane, reactive resin and particle proactive. Each one reacts differently to the lane. Ask pro shop employees what's best, based on your style, ability and budget.

If you're a middle-of-the-lane bowler, find a ball that matches your technique.

Choose a ball that suits your technique. Some are designed to provide a wide hook, but are useless for bowlers who lack that technique. Other balls are more suited for getting it straight down the lane, and usually cost less. Again, check with pro shop employees to determine what will work best.
