How to Roll a Hook Ball in Bowling

Bowling is a sport that can be enjoyed by both amateurs and professionals. Most amateurs throw the ball down the lane using a straight approach. That is, they attempt to start rolling the ball on a straight line to the destination. However, one way to more consistently hit the pins in the right location is to roll a hook. You don't have to be a professional bowler to roll a hook.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick up your bowling ball and grip the ball correctly. Place your index and ring fingers of your dominant hand into the two smaller holes. Then place your thumb into the thumb hole.

    • 2

Visualize the shot you will make in order to position yourself correctly. For a beginner, try standing in the middle, or a bit left of the middle, of the lane.

    • 3

Practice your approach. A common bowling approach is a four-step approach. Start with your right foot if you're right-handed and your left foot if your left-handed. Try to get a feel for the size of the strides you will need to take.

    • 4

Attempt the backswing. Keep your arm as straight as possible and bring the ball straight back.

    • 5

Release the ball as it reaches the ankle of your planted foot. Ensure that your palm is pointing straight up to the ceiling at this point.

    • 6

Follow through by bringing your arm straight up in front of your body. Turn your wrist as if you were going to shake someone's hand. The follow is what generates the spin, so this step is extremely important.

    • 7

Watch where the ball ended up and adjust your swing. Keep practicing until you become more consistent.
