How to Begin a Boxing Career
-
1
Consult your physician to make sure you do not have any preexisting medical conditions that may prevent you from training and enduring the physical stresses that boxing will put on your body.
-
2
Join a gym that specializes in training boxers. Shop around and compare before you make your decision. Pick a gym that has a proven track of producing successful fighters. Visit in person and get a feel for it. Make sure you feel confident and comfortable with the facilities, trainers and staff.
-
3
Get a fighting trainer from your gym – preferably a former fighter with a winning record. A good gym should have multiple trainers -- some with degrees or certifications in physical therapy, exercise science or fitness.
-
4
Train extensively. Getting in "fight shape" takes dedication, motivation and tons of work. If you've never boxed before, it will take a minimum of six months of continuous training before you are ready for your first fight. Your trainer should set up all the fights, matches and sparring sessions for you and will help gauge when you're ready to start fighting.
-
5
Start your career as an amateur to learn the basics and to see if you've got what it takes to win. If you can't win at the amateur level, you're not going to be successful at the professional level.
-
6
Take the plunge into your professional career by hiring a management group. Make sure the group has a track record of success. Get recommendations from your gym. Check their status with the Better Business Bureau. Finally, hire a lawyer to help you negotiate and look over any contracts before signing.
